Kitesurfing the Indian Ocean in Kenya

With constant trade winds throughout most of the year and water conditions that’ll blow your wildest fantasies out of the water, kitesurfing in Kenya is an unforgettable experience for kitesurfers of all levels.

This awesome trip video from Swiss crew Kiteboarding Brothers proves- with style- that you don’t need to be a world champ to deliver high quality and entertaining video content.

This little edit featuring the best Kenyan spots – Jacaranda Resort, Watamu Beach, Malindi, and the Tsavo National Park – will suck your eyes out of their sockets.

Wind in Kenya has 2 seasons, both of which are trade winds from the NE that blow a perfect side-on orientation and stay steady for most of the year.

The Kaskhazi (November to April) is warm and usually ranges from 18-25 knots, while the Kuzi (June to September) is a little bit cooler and therefore produces slightly stronger winds up to 30 knots.

Most beaches in Kenya have thin white sand and usually feature outer reefs up to 1km offshore, resulting in super flat conditions when the tide is right. In summer time, the ocean swell can get up to 2-3 meters on the reefs. There are also numerous large sandbars everywhere to play with or take breaks on, ideal for beginners.

Want to see more of Kenya? Here’s another good one from North team riders Craig Cunningham and Colleen Carol who visited Watamu for 10 days in 2016’s summer.
